Breast Reduction

Women with large, heavy breasts can suffer from back and neck pain, indents on the shoulders from bra straps, pain in the breasts, irritation of the skin underneath the breasts or breast asymmetry. Some women experience severe psychological discomfort. Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that helps to reduce large breasts and to improve their shape by removing the excess skin and tissue underlying under it. During this surgery, the areola (dark brownish area around the nipple) can be reduced in size, which becomes enlarged over time as the breasts develop.

Surgery
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and generally takes about 3 hours, depending on the extent of procedure. During the surgery, excess skin and breast tissue are removed, and the nipple and areola are moved to their anatomical location on the breast. A plastic surgeon designs the incisions so that the scar remains around the areola, vertically down from it and horizontally along the crease under the breast. These scars are not visible while wearing a bra, and with time they become less visible. At the time of breast reduction surgery, a drain can be placed, which is removed after several days.

Postoperative period
The patient can get out of bed the same day and return home next day. Stitches are removed during the first two weeks. You will be able to return to wok after 7-10 days and resume your routine activities. Although you get out of bed after a day or two, you should avoid rigorous movements and raising your arms overhead for 3–4 weeks. Breast reduction procedure is not recommended for women who intend to breast-feed. It is difficult to predict if a woman after surgery is able to breast-feed because during breast reduction surgery, the milk ducts leading to the nipple might be severed.
Since during the surgery the nipple is partially separated from the surrounding breast tissue, partially altering innervation, nipple sensation is reduced, which improves over time.
You will have to wear a special surgical bra for 4 weeks, 24 hours per day, following breast reduction surgery. You should avoid strenuous physical activities and sports for 2 months after surgery.
Most patients have a positive attitude towards reduced breasts and are happy with the results of this surgery.

Breast Lift
Over time, skin elasticity is lost, breast glandular and adipose tissues degenerate, the breasts sag and lose their youthful shape. Drooping breasts in women can result from pregnancy, breast-feeding, significant weight loss or ageing. This deformity can be corrected by breast lift surgery. Breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure that raises sagging breasts and gives them an aesthetic shape.

Surgery
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. Time in surgery is up to 3 hours. During the surgery, a plastic surgeon repositions the nipple and areola by moving them to a higher location on the breast and removes excess skin from the upper part of the breasts. By suturing the wound, breast contour is lifted to a higher position giving a more youthful shaped breast. If breast volume is small and a patient desires enlargement of the breasts, breast implants are placed behind the breast muscles simultaneously. Thus, the desired shape and size of the breasts are achieved.

Postoperative Period
To ensure proper wound healing, you should avoid heavy lifting above your head for 3 weeks after surgery. Recovery time, when you are able to return to your routine activities and work, will depend on your postoperative wound healing and general condition. Usually patients are able to return to work after 1 week. You should wear a special surgical bra for 4 weeks, 24 hours per day. Avoid strenuous physical activities and sports for 2 months after surgery.
