Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a procedure to remove excess skin or fat deposits from the eyelids. This procedure restores a youthful and refreshed appearance to your face. Following this surgery, the face becomes obviously rejuvenated. The upper and lower eyelids can be corrected either during the same procedure or separately. The procedure is often performed under local anaesthesia.
For upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made along the fold of the upper eyelid, following the natural contour of the upper eyelid. Through a parallel incision (the second one), excess skin is removed. During the surgery, fat deposits can be removed as well.

During lower eyelid surgery, fat deposits can be removed or redistributed. An incision most commonly is placed inside the lower eyelid (the transconjunctival approach); thus, this technique requires no external incision.

Time in surgery is about 1 hour. Following surgery, due to swelling, some patients have difficulty closing their eyes, which may cause dry eye syndrome. Artificial tears or lubricating ointment relieve this complication. Temporarily impaired vision can persist up to several days. In rare cases, the eyelid can turn dark and its elasticity can be reduced; in such case, conservative treatment is required. Stitches are removed in 4–7 days. After 2 weeks, the scars become almost invisible. The bruising usually disappears within several weeks, while the swelling can persist longer.
