Gynecomastia
The term ’gynecomastia’ comes from a Greek word meaning ‘women-like breast’. Gynecomastia affects about 30% of men to varying degrees. Gynecomastia is diagnosed in men not younger than 18 years. Enlarged breasts can cause extreme embarrassment, also social and psychological discomfort. Gynecomastia can be associated with obesity, hormonal imbalance, liver disease or use of some medications. During the consultation, discuss your wishes and expectations from the surgery with your surgeon. The surgeon will assess the size of your breasts and skin elasticity, and evaluate the underlying cause of your enlarged breasts. Gynecomastia involves developing an excess amount of glandular tissue and/or fatty tissue; most commonly it is a combination of both tissues.
Surgery
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The procedure usually takes 1 to 3 hours, and it depends on the extent of correction. If the enlargement of you breasts is caused by excess fatty tissue, during the surgery, fatty tissue will be removed. A hollow metal tube (cannula) is used to suction out the fatty deposits. This procedure requires several tiny incisions of less than 1 cm in length.
If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause of your gynecomastia, glandular tissue together with excess fat will be removed surgically. During this procedure, the incision is made along the lower edge of the nipple area (the areola). Gynecomastia may reoccur. It is especially common among men using anabolic steroids.
Postoperative Period
Bed rest is recommended for the first day. Your can experience some pain for several days. After surgery, a drain can be placed to prevent fluid accumulation, which is usually removed after 24–28 hours.
